your Safety Resume for Maximum Effectiveness
If you were
preparing a resume 25 years ago, you probably would have
used a typewriter while being careful not to make any
mistakes. Then you would have copied that original resume
onto blank paper to have as many resumes as you needed to
send out by mail.
Or you might
have went to a commercial printer to have your resume
typeset and printed onto expensive paper. The printer
probably had a minimum run requirement so you would end up
with 1,000 or more copies of your resume.
Things are
certainly different now. With computers, word
processing software and inexpensive home printers, you can
easily compose and print out your resume one copy at a
time. And that's just for the rare circumstances when
you need an ink on paper resume.
Most resumes are
now sent by email as a digital file attachment or sometimes
transmitted by a fax machine.
Among the
benefits of modern technology is the ability to customize
your resume to the prospective employer and you may want to
seriously consider taking advantage of that ability.
Suppose you have
safety experience in the healthcare industry, in retail and
in warehousing/distribution. You're looking for
a new safety job and are willing to work in any of the three
industries where you have experience.
When applying
for a healthcare industry position, emphasize your
healthcare experience on your resume and in your cover
letter. Likewise, when applying for a
warehousing/distribution position, emphasize and prioritize
your knowledge and experience in that field when wording and
laying out your resume.
With today's
technology, there's no reason to send out general resumes
when you can easily customize it for the specific position
being sought.
